# Find and create invoices

> Find an invoice, read its status, and create one from an appointment or on its own.

## Find an invoice

The **Billing** page lists every invoice you can see, with the total still outstanding. Search by patient, invoice or billing party, or filter by status.

## Invoice statuses

Bilby works out an invoice's status from its fees, payments and claims. You never set it by hand.

| Status | What it means |
| - | - |
| Awaiting payment | Unpaid, and within 30 days of the service date. |
| Overdue | Unpaid, and more than 30 days after the service date. |
| Partially Paid | Some has been paid. The rest is still owing. |
| Paid | Nothing left to pay. |
| Refunded | Every payment received has been returned. |
| Voided | Cancelled. It no longer counts toward what is owing. |

* A bulk-billed or DVA line isn't paid until Medicare or DVA accepts the claim, even when the patient owes nothing.
* A failed patient rebate claim doesn't change a paid invoice. The rebate is between the patient and Medicare.

Billing party required is a badge, not a status. The invoice should go to a third party but doesn't yet say who. See [Fix Billing party required](https://docs.bilby.health/billing/work-on-an-invoice.md#fix-billing-party-required).

## Create an invoice

### From an appointment

Most invoices come from appointments.

1. Open the appointment in the calendar and select **Edit**.
2. Under Fees, add the services or fees.
3. Save the appointment. Bilby adds the fees to the appointment's invoice, and creates it if needed.
4. Select **Invoice** in the appointment panel to open it.

In the appointment panel, Bill to chooses who this appointment's invoice goes to.

### Without an appointment

Use this for fees not tied to an appointment, such as reports or missed appointments.

1. On the **Billing** page, select **New invoice**.
2. Choose the patient, practitioner and who to bill.
3. Add a line for each fee, or a custom line with your own description and amount.
4. Select **Create invoice**.
