# Refund a payment

> Refund all or part of a payment, and which payments you can't refund here.

1. On the invoice, open the payment's menu and select **Refund**.
2. Check the amount. Lower it for a partial refund.
3. Choose how the money goes back.
4. Read the note under the fields. It says what will happen.
5. Select **Refund**.

If you refund a Stripe card payment back to the card, Bilby refunds it through Stripe. Any other way, Bilby only records the refund and you return the money yourself.

A refund shows as its own line on the invoice. The original payment is never changed. You can refund an invoice that is in Xero.

## Payments you can't refund here

* Medicare benefit payments. These are reversed through a Medicare adjustment.
* A payment on a voided invoice. Restore the invoice, refund the payment, then void it again.
* A payment that hasn't been received, or one already refunded in full.
