# Take payments and deposits

> Take a payment by card or another method, use prepaid funds, and ask for a deposit.

## Take a payment

On the invoice, select **Take payment** in the Payments section, then choose how:

* **Record payment** records money you've already received, such as cash, EFTPOS, bank transfer or HICAPS.
* **Send payment link** makes a secure Stripe payment page you can copy, email or text to the patient.
* **Charge saved card** charges a card the patient saved earlier. To save one, select **Add a card**.

When a patient pays by link or saved card, the payment is recorded on the invoice for you. Payment links and saved cards need Stripe. See [Payments (Stripe)](https://docs.bilby.health/integrations/stripe.md).

### Change a payment

Open a payment's menu to send a receipt, refund it or delete it. You can delete a payment you recorded by hand, but this can't be undone. Card payments through Stripe can't be deleted. To give money back, see [Refund a payment](https://docs.bilby.health/billing/refunds.md).

### Use prepaid funds

When a billing party has paid in advance, select **Apply prepaid** on the invoice to pay it from those funds. You set up prepaid funds on the patient's funding arrangement in **Patient › Billing**.

## Ask for a deposit

1. On the invoice, select **More actions › Request deposit**. You can also start from the appointment panel.
2. Enter the deposit amount.
3. Charge a saved card, or make a payment link to copy, email or text.

A deposit is a part-payment on this invoice. It reduces what is owing.

Deposits taken when a patient books are on the Awaiting payment page. See [Awaiting payment](https://docs.bilby.health/calendar/front-desk-queues.md#awaiting-payment).
