# Skip rules, scoring and alerts

> Show questions only when needed, score answers into bands, and flag answers that need attention.

## Skip rules

A skip rule shows a question only when an earlier answer matches, such as "Shown when Smoker is Yes".

Open the question, open **Skip logic**, turn on the rule, then choose the earlier question and the answer it depends on. A question can only depend on one before it.

## Scoring and severity bands

Scoring adds answers into one or more scores and gives each score a severity, such as Mild or Severe.

1. Select **Scoring** in the outline and turn scoring on.
2. Give each answer a score on its question.
3. Select **Add subscale**, name it and tick its questions.
4. Add a severity band for each score range.

Bilby tells you if something doesn't add up, such as bands that overlap. Use **Preview** to check the scores before you publish.

## Item alerts

An alert flags a response when one question reaches a score, whatever the total. Use it for risk items such as PHQ-9 question 9.

Under Item alerts, select **Add alert**, choose the question and score, and type the flag to show. The flag appears on the patient's **Forms** tab and on **Forms › Sent**.
