# Recalls

> Set up rules that remind patients when they're due back.

Recalls are automatic messages that invite patients to rebook or follow up. Admins set them up in **Settings › Recalls**. There are three rules:

* **Rebooking nudge**: patients who haven't been in for a while and have nothing booked.
* **Referral expiring**: patients whose referral is close to its end.
* **Post-appointment follow-up**: a follow-up or thank-you a few days after an appointment.

## Set up a recall

1. Go to **Settings › Recalls** and open the rule's tab.
2. Turn the rule on and set when it sends.
3. Choose email, SMS or both, and write the message.
4. Select **Save**.

Recall texts can't take replies, so include your phone number.

Referral expiring also notifies your team that a new referral may be needed. Turn off email and SMS if you want your team told without contacting the patient.

Once a rule is on, Bilby sends recalls by itself. Each one appears in the patient's **Message history**.
