# Patient files

> Upload, preview, rename and delete files, accept files from patients, and upload many at once.

## Upload a file

The Files tab holds referrals, results, imaging and other documents.

1. Open the patient's **Files** tab and select **Upload file**.
2. Choose the file, give it a clear title and pick a category.
3. Select **Upload**.

You can also drag files from your computer straight onto the patient's record, or onto the appointment panel. Files are always added to the patient, not to the appointment.

If you upload a PDF as a referral, Bilby can offer to read details from it. See [Read details from a referral PDF](https://docs.bilby.health/patients/read-a-referral.md).

### Preview, download, rename or delete a file

Select a file's name to preview it. Each file's menu (three dots) has the other actions.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Deleting a file removes it permanently. It can't be undone.

### Files sent by the patient

When the patient portal is on, patients can send you files. They wait under "Sent by the patient" until someone opens each one and accepts or declines it. See [Online booking and patient pages](https://docs.bilby.health/online-booking/overview).

## Upload many files at once

Batch upload files scanned letters and results for many patients in one go. Admins and reception can use it.

1. Select **Batch upload** in the sidebar and add your files.
2. Check the patient for each file. Bilby suggests one when the file name gives it away, so check its guess.
3. Choose a category for each file.
4. Select **Upload**. It works once every file has a patient.
